Course Overview

Our First Aid for Children course is part of our First Aid for Free initiative, which aims to improve the emergency response skills of local people by providing high-quality, accessible first aid education. Designed for parents, grandparents, carers, babysitters and anyone who looks after children, this interactive classroom course teaches you what to do when a child or young person under the age of 16 experiences a medical emergency. You’ll learn how to recognise when a child needs urgent medical attention and gain the confidence to act quickly while waiting for professional help. The course covers first response and calling for help, what to do if a child stops breathing, choking emergencies, severe bleeding, burns, heat- and cold-related emergencies, recognising when a child is seriously unwell, and understanding when common illnesses or minor injuries can be safely managed without attending hospital.

The course is delivered face-to-face in small groups of typically 6–12 learners, allowing plenty of opportunity to ask questions and practise essential first aid skills under the guidance of experienced medical professionals, including registered nurses and paramedics. The course content has also been developed with input from a local GP to ensure the information reflects current best practice. Places are limited and fill quickly, so we recommend registering as soon as possible. If you are unable to attend after booking, please let us know so that your place can be offered to someone else. Our training centre is fully wheelchair accessible, and we are committed to making our courses welcoming and inclusive for everyone.

This course combines classroom teaching, group discussion and practical skills to give you the knowledge and confidence to respond to common childhood emergencies. Throughout the session, you’ll have the opportunity to ask questions, learn from real-life examples and practise key first aid techniques under the guidance of experienced healthcare professionals.

During the course you will learn how to:

  • Recognise when a child is seriously unwell and needs urgent medical attention.
  • Respond to a choking child using age-appropriate first aid techniques.
  • Recognise when a child has stopped breathing and begin life-saving first aid.
  • Manage breathing difficulties, including asthma attacks and other respiratory emergencies.
  • Recognise and respond to panic attacks and anxiety-related emergencies in older children and teenagers.
  • Control bleeding and provide immediate care for burns and scalds.
  • Recognise common childhood infections, including rashes that require urgent medical assessment.
  • Manage common childhood injuries, including bumps, cuts, sprains and minor fractures.
  • Respond appropriately if a child has swallowed or been exposed to a poisonous substance, whether accidental or intentional.
  • Recognise potential safeguarding concerns and understand when and how to seek help to keep a child safe.

This course is designed to provide practical knowledge and confidence and is delivered for educational purposes only. At the end of the course, you will receive a Certificate of Attendance to recognise your participation.

Please note that this is not a regulated qualification and is not suitable where a recognised Paediatric First Aid certificate is required for employment or professional registration. If you need a workplace-compliant first aid qualification, please see our First Aid at Work and Paediatric First Aid courses. These programmes are delivered to nationally recognised standards, are formally validated by regulated awarding organisations, and meet the requirements for most workplace first aid roles.

There are no formal entry requirements for this course, and no previous first aid knowledge or experience is needed.

As the course includes discussions about medical emergencies, injuries and illnesses affecting children, participants must be 16 years of age or over.

The course also includes practical first aid activities. If you have any physical disabilities, mobility limitations or other learning or accessibility needs, please let us know before the course. We will do everything we reasonably can to make appropriate adjustments so that you can take part comfortably and safely.
