Applying for an Apprenticeship

What employers look for, what you need before you apply, and what happens after the offer.

How it works

You apply to the employer, not to Medipro. The employer interviews you, offers you the job and chooses us to deliver the training. From then on you have a named tutor, a training plan agreed with your employer, and a qualification at the end.

What you need before you apply

Entry requirements are set by the apprenticeship standard and by the employer. The ones that catch people out:

Age
16 or over for most standards. Both ambulance apprenticeships (Ambulance Support Worker and Associate Ambulance Practitioner) need you to be 19, because you must have held a full driving licence for at least a year and have C1 on it.
Driving licence
Ambulance apprenticeships need a full licence held for at least a year with no more than 6 points. If you passed your test after 1 January 1997 you will also need C1 added to your licence, which is a separate DVLA test. Employers often help with this, so ask.
English and maths
Most standards no longer require you to hold GCSEs if you are 19 or over. The Level 3 Pharmacy Technician standard is the exception: grade 4 or C in both before you start.
DBS and health checks
An enhanced DBS check and occupational health or vaccination requirements set by the employer. These are done after the offer, not before you apply.
Right to work and residency
Government funding needs you to have lived in the UK or EEA for three years, with some exceptions. Ask us if you are unsure.
Experience
Usually none. Employers hire on attitude, reliability and values, then we teach the rest.

Step 1
A CV or application form
Keep it short, factual and matched to the role. See How to Write a CV.
Step 2
Screening
Larger employers use software to filter applications before anyone reads them, so use the words in the advert.
Step 3
Interview or assessment
NHS and ambulance employers use values-based questions. Some add a fitness test or a driving assessment. See Preparing for an Interview.
Step 4
The offer
Once you accept, the employer tells us and we start your enrolment: eligibility checks, a skills scan to see what you already know, and your training plan.
Step 5
Day one
Induction with your tutor, your login to Aptem, and your first learning task done there and then.
