Course Overview

Your first step into pre-hospital emergency care

FREC 3 is the Level 3 Award in First Response Emergency Care, regulated by Ofqual and recognised across the ambulance sector, event medical, security, offshore and industrial first response.

It is the entry qualification for anyone who wants to work in pre-hospital care, and the prerequisite for FREC 4.

Five days with us in Stockton-on-Tees, taught by clinicians who work in pre-hospital care rather than career trainers.

Medipro has trained over 10,000 learners and is rated Good by Ofsted. Our clients include NHS ambulance trusts, Falck, Subsea 7 and the British Army.

Where it leads

FREC 3 is the start of a pathway, not a standalone certificate. It leads to FREC 4, to our Pre-Hospital Trauma Management course, and to the Level 3 Ambulance Support Worker and Level 4 Associate Ambulance Practitioner apprenticeships. We deliver all of them, so you are not starting again somewhere else.

All our prices include VAT, so what you see is what you pay.

You can add the following services when booking your course. None is included in the course fee, and prices are shown during checkout.

Accommodation

Add the number of nights you need at our learner rate. We book the room, confirm it with you and settle it with the hotel, so it is one checkout rather than two bookings. See the Accommodation section below for rates and what is included.

FREC 4

The Level 4 Certificate, the next step after FREC 3. Read more about FREC 4.

Prices for all optional services are shown during checkout.

Five days of classroom and practical training, assessed throughout.

  • Primary and secondary patient assessment
  • Trauma management
  • Basic and advanced airway management
  • Medical emergencies including stroke, diabetes, seizures and asthma
  • CPR and defibrillation
  • Catastrophic haemorrhage control
  • Spinal immobilisation and casualty handling
  • Use of emergency medical equipment

Taught by clinicians who work in pre-hospital care.

How you are assessed

  • Continuous practical assessment across the five days
  • Written assessment
  • Clinical scenario assessment

What you will hold on completion

  • FutureQuals Level 3 Award in First Response Emergency Care (RQF), regulated by Ofqual, valid three years

When it is due, our three-day FREC 3 requalification renews it.

You must be at least 18 on the first day of the course. No previous clinical qualification is needed.

There are several ways to pay, and a few ways to pay less.

Secure your place with a 20% deposit

You do not need to pay in full to book. Pay 20% at checkout and secure your place on the date you want. The balance is due before your course starts.

Pay in full with Klarna

Choose Klarna at checkout and spread the cost on Klarna’s terms. Your place is paid in full and confirmed straight away. Subject to Klarna’s eligibility checks.

12-month payment plan

Pay across twelve monthly instalments at 0% interest. Speak to our team before booking to set this up.

ELCAS funding

Service leavers may be able to claim up to 80% of the course fee through ELCAS. We are an approved provider and can help with the paperwork.

Multiple booking discount

Employers booking four or more learners receive 15% off the total, including any optional services added at checkout.

Returning learners

Trained with us before? When you come back to requalify, take 10% off your refresher.

Course fee money-back guarantee

Attend the course, complete the learning and follow your tutor’s guidance. If you still do not pass, we refund your course fee. On eligible courses.

Staying overnight

Travelling to us from outside Teesside? We have agreed learner rates with the Sporting Lodge Inn at Stainton, a 5 to 10 minute drive from our Stockton-on-Tees centre, with easy access from the A19 and A174.

  • £75 per night – bed and breakfast
  • £95 per night – dinner, bed and breakfast, including a two-course evening meal and a drink

Both rates include free on-site parking and free use of the hotel gym and 25-metre pool. There is a pub and restaurant on site.

These rates are only available through us, not directly with the hotel. Add the nights you need to your checkout when you book your course, and we will arrange it and confirm the details with you.

Rooms are subject to availability, so book as early as you can. Plans change, so if you need to cancel your room, do so up to 24 hours before arrival and we will refund it.

Where is it held?

Faraday House, Sopwith Close, Stockton-on-Tees, close to the A66 and A19. Easy reach from Middlesbrough, Darlington, Hartlepool, Durham and Newcastle.

Do I need any experience?

No. You need to be 18 on the first day of the course. No previous clinical qualification is required.

How long does the qualification last?

Three years. You then take the three-day requalification rather than the full course again.

What jobs can I do with FREC 3?

It is the recognised entry qualification for event medical, ambulance support, security medical roles, industrial first response and offshore work. It is also the prerequisite for FREC 4.

What’s the difference between FREC 3 and FREC 4?

FREC 3 is the five-day entry qualification. FREC 4 builds on it with advanced assessment, pain management and pharmacology, and adds directed study with three assignment workbooks. You need FREC 3 before you can take FREC 4.

Can I use ELCAS?

Yes, if you are a service leaver. We are an approved provider and can help with the paperwork.

Is accommodation available?

Yes, if you are travelling from outside Teesside. See the Accommodation section above.

What happens after FREC 3?

Most learners go on to FREC 4, our Pre-Hospital Trauma Management course, or an ambulance apprenticeship. We deliver all of them.

Over 10,000 people have begun their clinical career with us.

We support NHS ambulance services, dental practices, community pharmacies, care providers and offshore operators. Here is what some of them say.
