Course Overview
Deliver Critical Trauma Care with Confidence in the Field
The Pre-Hospital Trauma Management (PHTM) course is a dynamic, hands-on training programme developed by MediPro and endorsed by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd). It is built for emergency care professionals working in high-risk, remote or time-critical settings, and focuses on the rapid assessment and management of life-threatening trauma using evidence-based practice.
Whether you are a paramedic, racecourse doctor or offshore medic, PHTM gives you the clinical judgement and technical skills to save lives in the pre-hospital phase of care.
New for 2026: a blended course, more hands-on time
We have refreshed how PHTM is delivered. The course now includes 20 online learning modules, all mapped to the RCSEd core manual. You complete the underpinning theory before you arrive. Your two days in class stay the same length — the difference is that time is now spent where it counts most: practical application, trauma simulations and skills stations.
The online modules are accessible from any internet-connected device, with 12 months of access. Learn at your own pace, revisit the content whenever you need it, and arrive ready to put theory into practice. Completion of the eLearning will take approximately 7-10 hours.

What you will cover in the classroom
With the theory completed online, the two days on site concentrate on hands-on trauma management, including:
- Trauma scene management — scene safety, triage and casualty approach.
- Airway and ventilation — supraglottic airways, BVMs, suction and oxygenation.
- Bleeding control and shock management — tourniquets, haemostatic agents and fluid therapy.
- Spinal injury and immobilisation — best practice for extrication and spinal motion restriction.
- Major trauma and head injury response — identifying red flags and rapid escalation.
- Paediatric and special population trauma — modifying assessment for vulnerable patients.
Scenario-based learning — multiple simulations replicating high-stress trauma incidents.
Following written and practical examinations a certificate will be awarded which is valid for 3 years from the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh.
Learners are required to be clinical professionals which include GMC registered doctors, NMC registered nurses (with pre-hospital care experience), HCPC paramedics and offshore medics.
