Train to Drive Under Emergency Conditions with Confidence and Control

The Level 3 Certificate in Emergency Response Ambulance Driving (CERAD) is the nationally recognised qualification required to drive an ambulance under blue light conditions in the UK. This course is ideal for individuals working in, or aspiring to join, the ambulance service, private medical providers, or emergency transport services.

Delivered by qualified emergency services instructors, the course meets all DVSA and NHS Trust standards, ensuring you’re fully prepared for the demands of emergency driving.

Choose from our three pathways based on the type of vehicle you’ll be working with:

  • Pathway 1 – Class 3 Ambulance Vehicles – medium-sized ambulances with four or more wheels and a gross vehicle weight exceeding 3500kg
  • Pathway 2 – Class 2 ambulance (light) vehicles with 4 or more wheels and a gross vehicle weight of at least 3250kg, but not exceeding 3500kg
  • Pathway 3 – Class 2 ambulance response cars.

This qualification focuses on the core competencies and techniques required to safely drive under emergency conditions, including:

  • Legislation & Emergency Driving Law – Understanding the exemptions and legal responsibilities of blue light drivers.
  • Advanced Driving Techniques – Managing speed, hazards, road positioning, and dynamic risk assessment.
  • Driving Under Pressure – Maintaining safety and control during high-stress emergency response situations.
  • Route Planning & Navigation – Effective use of mapping tools and navigation systems in emergency contexts.
  • Vehicle Checks & Operational Readiness – Conducting daily vehicle inspections and ensuring equipment readiness.
  • Communication & Coordination – Working with dispatch and other emergency services to support timely response.

All training is delivered in a controlled environment with structured assessments and simulated emergency runs.

Upon successful completion of the written and practical assessments the following certificates will be awarded:

Prior to starting the course learners must meet the following criteria:

  • be 21 years of age (or older) on the first day of teaching.
  • possess the right values, behaviours and attributes appropriate to the role.
  • not have any outstanding court cases, prosecutions or pending disciplinary action in any area being brought against them.
  • hold a valid driving license for the class of vehicle being driven for the full duration of the qualification, with no more than 6 points.
  • have a contract with either an NHS ambulance service or a voluntary or private ambulance provider that is CQC registered and contracted to provide emergency ambulance provision to the NHS ambulance services.

Learners with Type 1 Diabetes can still apply as long as it is well controlled.

Any previous driving ban for any reason must be advised to us at when booking this course.

We provide a number of options to support you fund and finance this course. These include:

  • 12 month payment plan – we can support learners to spread the cost of their training over the 12 month period in equal instalments at 0% interest.
  • ELCAS funding – learners from the military may have funding available to support new civilian qualifications. Depending on the length of your service you maybe eligible for £1000 or £2000 towards this course.
  • Multiple booking discount – for companies who book 4 or more learners onto this course, you will be given a 15% discount on the total price.
