Course Overview

Our Emergency First Aid at Work course is a practical, nationally recognised regulated qualification that gives learners the confidence to deal with an emergency situation safely and effectively. This EFAW course is ideal for employers and individuals who need recognised aid at work training, an aid at work certificate, and the essential skills to respond to workplace incidents, provide basic life support, and potentially save lives.

Course Overview

The MediPro Emergency First Aid at Work course is a practical one-day workplace first aid qualification designed to give learners the knowledge, skills and confidence to respond effectively when somebody becomes injured or suddenly unwell at work.

Delivered at our Stockton-on-Tees training centre, the course leads to the nationally regulated Qualsafe Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work (RQF).

Emergency First Aid at Work, commonly known as EFAW, is suitable for employers whose first-aid needs assessment identifies a requirement for trained emergency first aiders. It is commonly used across offices, retail, hospitality, education, community organisations, customer-facing businesses and other workplaces where the risks are relatively low.

The course is highly practical. Learners develop essential skills including casualty assessment, CPR, use of an automated external defibrillator (AED), managing an unconscious casualty, choking, bleeding and shock.

Scheduled courses are available throughout the year at MediPro’s centre in Stockton-on-Tees. We can also deliver Emergency First Aid at Work training onsite for employers across Teesside and the wider North East.

HSE requires employers to provide first-aid equipment, facilities and personnel that are adequate and appropriate for their individual workplace. The appropriate level of first aid training should therefore be determined through a workplace first-aid needs assessment. HSE

Who Is This Course For?

Emergency First Aid at Work is suitable for people who may be required to provide immediate first aid within their workplace.

This can include staff working in offices, shops, hospitality, education, community organisations, small businesses and other environments where the employer’s first-aid needs assessment identifies EFAW as the appropriate level of training.

Employers with higher-risk workplaces, larger or dispersed workforces, hazardous activities, remote workers or a history of more significant incidents may require the more comprehensive three-day First Aid at Work qualification or additional specialist training.

HSE specifically recommends considering workplace hazards, workforce size and distribution, shift patterns, lone or remote workers, previous incidents and the distance from emergency medical services when assessing first-aid requirements.

The Emergency First Aid at Work course develops the core knowledge and practical skills needed to respond to a workplace emergency.

Learners will cover:

  • the role and responsibilities of an emergency first aider
  • assessing an incident safely
  • primary casualty assessment
  • recognising life-threatening conditions
  • when and how to call the emergency services
  • adult CPR
  • safe use of an AED
  • managing an unresponsive casualty
  • the recovery position
  • monitoring a casualty
  • recognising and treating choking
  • controlling external bleeding
  • recognising and managing shock
  • managing minor cuts, grazes and bruises
  • minor burns and scalds
  • nosebleeds and other common minor workplace injuries

Current first aid guidance increasingly emphasises early recognition of serious illness or injury, calling for professional help promptly and using a structured approach to casualty assessment.

CPR and AED Training

Cardiac arrest can happen without warning.

Learners practise adult CPR and learn how to use an automated external defibrillator safely and effectively.

The practical session includes recognising cardiac arrest, calling for help, delivering chest compressions and rescue breaths, applying AED pads and following the instructions given by the device.

AED training forms an important part of modern workplace first aid provision.

Choking

Learners are taught how to recognise the difference between mild and severe airway obstruction and how to respond appropriately when an adult is choking.

Bleeding and Shock

Learners develop practical skills in controlling external bleeding and recognising the signs of shock.

Where an employer identifies a risk of life-threatening bleeding within the workplace, additional equipment or training may also be appropriate. Current HSE guidance specifically highlights life-threatening bleeding as something that employers should consider through their first-aid needs assessment. HSE

Assessment

Assessment takes place throughout the course.

Learners complete practical assessments to demonstrate the required first aid skills alongside the required theory assessment.

Your tutor will explain the assessment process clearly and provide opportunities to practise the required skills throughout the day.

On successful completion, learners will receive the:

Qualsafe Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work (RQF)

This is a regulated qualification with 6 guided learning hours, 7 total qualification time, and a certificate that is valid for 3 years. Assessment includes practical observation and a 15-question multiple-choice paper, with a minimum mark of 11 out of 15 required for the theory element.

This gives learners a recognised aid at work certificate that can support employment, compliance and workplace health and safety needs.

After three years, learners will need to undertake appropriate requalification training if they wish to continue acting as a workplace first aider.
HSE also strongly recommends annual refresher training to help first aiders maintain their basic skills and confidence between formal requalification courses.

Learners must be 14 years old on the first day of learning.

Refresher courses

Although the certificate is valid for three years, regular updating is good practice. The specification lists recommended refresher courses, including the Qualsafe Level 3 Award in Adult Basic Life Support and Automated External Defibrillation (RQF).

This is useful for employers who want staff to keep their confidence and competence up to date rather than waiting until the full renewal point.

Mental health and wider wellbeing

This course focuses on immediate physical first aid rather than mental health first aid. Even so, it still plays an important role in a wider health and safety strategy, alongside other staff wellbeing and compliance training. For many employers, this course sits well within a broader staff development offer that may include additional courses including health and safety, fire safety and mental health awareness.

We provide a number of options to support you fund and finance this course. These include:

  • Multiple booking discount – for companies who book 2 learners onto this course, you will receive a 50% discount on the 3rd
  • Course Fee Money-Back Guarantee – On eligible courses, if you attend, complete the required learning, follow tutor guidance and still do not pass, we will refund your course fee.
