Course Overview

Our Emergency First Aid at Work course is a practical, nationally recognised regulated qualification that gives learners the confidence to deal with an emergency situation safely and effectively. This EFAW course is ideal for employers and individuals who need recognised aid at work training, an aid at work certificate, and the essential skills to respond to workplace incidents, provide basic life support, and potentially save lives.

Course Overview

Medipro delivers the Emergency First Aid at Work qualification as one of its core workplace first aid courses, designed for people who may need to act as an emergency first aider in the workplace. It is suitable for a wide range of organisations, including offices, schools, community settings, customer-facing businesses and other lower risk environments where an appointed first aider is needed. The course is also available for employers wanting on-site delivery for staff teams.

This fist aid course leads to the Qualsafe Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work (RQF). The qualification specification states that it is intended for people with a specific responsibility at work, or in voluntary and community activities, to provide emergency first aid in line with current UK practice.

The programme is aligned to the Health and Safety Executive expectations for Emergency First Aid at Work training and covers the core knowledge and practical aid techniques needed to deal with an emergency situation until further help arrives. It gives learners the confidence to assess incidents, protect casualties, provide basic life support, manage common injuries and support good workplace safety practice.

Why choose this course with Medipro?

This course is a strong choice for employers looking for reliable first aid training courses and individuals who want practical, recognised first aid training.

With Medipro, learners benefit from:

  • A recognised regulated qualification from Qualsafe Awards
  • A one-day course delivered at Medipro’s Stockton-on-Tees centre or on-site for employers
  • Practical learning that builds confidence in responding to an emergency situation
  • Core training in CPR, choking, bleeding, shock and basic life support
  • Teaching suitable for a wide range of workplace settings
  • Useful progression into refresher and other first aid programmes, with the specification listing recommended refresher courses including annual refresher options and adult basic life support with AED.

Who is this course for?

This course is designed for people who need emergency first aid skills as part of their job role or workplace arrangements.

It is suitable for:

  • Appointed first aiders in offices and low risk environments
  • Staff in retail, hospitality and customer-facing settings
  • School, charity and community organisation teams
  • Employers wanting practical workplace first aid courses for staff
  • Individuals who need an aid at work certificate for work or career development

It is also a useful option for organisations wanting courses including CPR, choking management, bleeding control, shock awareness and minor injury treatment within one recognised programme. The course specification covers those topics directly.

This first aid course is built around the actual Qualsafe unit content and gives learners the essential skills to respond confidently and safely. Qualification specification is HERE.

During the course, learners will cover:

  • The role and responsibilities of a first aider
  • How to assess an emergency situation safely
  • How to get help and communicate with emergency services
  • Adult CPR and basic life support
  • Safe use of an AED
  • The care of an unconscious casualty
  • Recovery position and ongoing monitoring
  • How to deal with choking
  • How to manage external bleeding
  • How to recognise and respond to shock
  • How to deal with minor injuries, including cuts, bruises, splinters, burns, scalds and nosebleeds

This makes it one of the most useful workplace first aid courses for employers who want staff trained in practical, real-world emergency response.

Basic life support

A key part of this EFAW course is basic life support. Learners are taught how to recognise when CPR is needed, how to carry out effective chest compressions and rescue breaths, and how to use an AED correctly. The Qualsafe specification requires practical demonstration of adult CPR and safe AED use, including correct pad placement and following the device prompts.

These are core aid techniques that help learners respond quickly in a life-threatening incident and may help save lives before emergency services arrive.

Syllabus breakdown

Module 1: The role of the emergency first aider

Understanding the responsibilities of a first aider, scene safety, incident assessment and how to respond appropriately in an emergency situation.

Module 2: Primary survey and basic life support

Practical training in DRABC principles, CPR, rescue breaths and AED use, building confidence in basic life support and immediate casualty care.

Module 3: Unconscious casualty management

How to manage a casualty who is unresponsive but breathing, including recovery position and continual monitoring. The specification also includes awareness of seizures and when to call 999.

Module 4: Choking, bleeding and shock

Recognising choking, managing the casualty safely, controlling external bleeding and understanding the signs of hypovolaemic shock. The current specification also includes optional catastrophic bleeding content.

Module 5: Minor injuries

Treatment principles for cuts, grazes, bruises, splinters, nosebleeds, minor burns and scalds.

Module 6: Assessment

Practical observation throughout the course and a multiple-choice theory assessment. Learners must pass all mandatory areas to achieve the qualification.

On successful completion, learners will receive the:

Qualsafe Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work (RQF)

This is a regulated qualification with 6 guided learning hours, 7 total qualification time, and a certificate that is valid for 3 years. Assessment includes practical observation and a 15-question multiple-choice paper, with a minimum mark of 11 out of 15 required for the theory element.

This gives learners a recognised aid at work certificate that can support employment, compliance and workplace health and safety needs.

Learners must be 14 years old on the first day of learning.

Refresher courses

Although the certificate is valid for three years, regular updating is good practice. The specification lists recommended refresher courses, including the Qualsafe Level 3 Award in Adult Basic Life Support and Automated External Defibrillation (RQF).

This is useful for employers who want staff to keep their confidence and competence up to date rather than waiting until the full renewal point.

Mental health and wider wellbeing

This course focuses on immediate physical first aid rather than mental health first aid. Even so, it still plays an important role in a wider health and safety strategy, alongside other staff wellbeing and compliance training. For many employers, this course sits well within a broader staff development offer that may include additional courses including health and safety, fire safety and mental health awareness.
