Would you know what to do in a child’s emergency?
A child starts choking at the dinner table. A toddler tumbles and won’t stop bleeding. A baby suddenly struggles to breathe. In moments like these, the person best placed to help isn’t a paramedic several minutes away — it’s whoever is in the room. Would that be you?
Most of us have never been shown what to do, and that gap in confidence is exactly what our free Paediatric Emergencies Awareness course is designed to close. In a single, relaxed three-hour session, you’ll learn the practical steps that can make all the difference to a child in an emergency — no medical background required.
WHAT YOU’LL LEARN
The session is hands-on and easy to follow, led by an experienced instructor in a small, friendly group. You’ll cover:
– Recognising when a child is seriously ill and needs urgent help
– How to respond to choking in babies and children
– What to do when a child stops breathing, including CPR
– Managing breathing difficulties such as asthma attacks
– Controlling bleeding, and treating burns and scalds
– Spotting the signs behind childhood infections and rashes
– Dealing with common injuries, poisoning and everyday accidents
– Recognising safeguarding concerns and knowing where to turn
WHO IT’S FOR
This course is for parents, grandparents, carers, babysitters, childminders — anyone aged 16 or over who looks after children and wants to feel more prepared. You don’t need any previous first aid experience. Everyone is welcome, and everything is explained from the ground up.
WHY WE RUN IT FOR FREE
Paediatric Emergencies Awareness is part of our First Aid for Free initiative, which exists to put life-saving skills into as many local hands as possible. We believe the confidence to help a child in an emergency shouldn’t depend on what you can afford, so every place on these sessions is fully funded. There’s no catch and nothing to pay.
Good to know: this is an awareness course, and you’ll receive a certificate of attendance on completion. It’s designed to build personal confidence rather than serve as a regulated qualification for workplace compliance — if you need accredited paediatric first aid for work, we can point you to the right course.

Sessions run at Faraday House, Sopwith Close, Stockton-on-Tees, TS18 3TT, in small groups of around 6–12 people. Places are limited and tend to fill quickly, so early booking is recommended.
