Across the North East, NHS hospitals continue to operate under sustained pressure. Workforce shortages, rising demand and the challenge of supporting new starters safely and effectively are realities faced by every trust.
Healthcare Assistants sit at the heart of safe, compassionate care. When they are supported well from the outset, the impact is felt quickly confidence grows, patient support becomes more consistent, and ward teams feel the benefit almost immediately.
This is where the Level 3 Senior Healthcare Support Worker Apprenticeship offers real value. When designed thoughtfully, it provides not just a qualification, but a practical, workforce-focused solution that blends real clinical contribution with structured development.
A collaborative launch with North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Trust
After several months of close planning, Medipro has now launched apprenticeship training for almost 70 newly recruited Healthcare Assistants in partnership with North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Trust.
Every learner has enrolled onto the Level 3 Senior Healthcare Support Worker Apprenticeship, with the programme shaped through collaboration between Medipro, the trust’s education team, ward matrons and recruitment leads.
That collaborative design has been critical. Rather than adding pressure to already stretched services, the apprenticeship has been embedded as part of a wider workforce approach supporting new starters while aligning with ward expectations and operational reality.
A front-loaded model that supports both learners and wards
One of the most common challenges trusts face is enabling new Healthcare Assistants to contribute early, without compromising confidence, safety or quality of care.
To address this, Medipro has developed a front-loaded delivery model, focusing on core knowledge, skills and professional behaviours early in the programme. This means apprentices arrive on the ward better prepared, less overwhelmed, and clearer about their role from the outset.
For ward teams, the benefits are tangible. Early supervision demands are reduced, delegation becomes safer, and expectations are clearer from day one supporting both patient care and team cohesion.
High-fidelity training grounded in real clinical practice
Training is most effective when it reflects the realities learners will face on the ward. Our programme uses high-fidelity simulation to immerse apprentices in realistic clinical scenarios within a safe learning environment.
This approach supports the development of strong habits around patient assessment, recognising and escalating concerns, and communicating effectively with the wider multidisciplinary team. For many learners, this is where confidence shifts most noticeably moving beyond task-based delivery to understanding why their actions matter.
Structured mentorship that sustains progress
Successful apprenticeships require more than motivation alone. They rely on consistent, well-planned support.
Alongside classroom delivery, this programme includes a structured mentorship model, aligned with scheduled return periods to learning. This allows apprentices time to consolidate knowledge, build academic confidence and develop professional behaviours that will support progression into future roles.
Crucially, this structure helps maintain momentum during periods of increased service demand, protecting learner progress while respecting operational pressures.
Supporting long-term workforce pathways
For many Healthcare Assistants, the Level 3 Senior Healthcare Support Worker Apprenticeship is not the end goal it is a foundation for a longer career in health and care.
This was a key factor in the programme’s appeal to North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Trust. The model supports immediate contribution on the ward, while also aligning with longer-term workforce planning and progression routes, including pathways into nursing.
Why this programme matters
Kirsty Wharton, Medipro’s Head of Curriculum, explains the thinking behind the programme and its wider ambition:
“We are well established in pre-hospital education and have grown our apprenticeship delivery across dental and pharmacy. Adding the Level 3 Senior Healthcare Support Worker standard felt like a natural step for Medipro and a meaningful one for our region.
This has been a challenging project because the ambition is high and the numbers are significant, but it has also been one of the most rewarding partnerships we’ve delivered. These learners will be operational over Christmas 2025, supporting patients, colleagues and ward teams at one of the toughest points in the NHS calendar.
We have built a front-loaded model with high-fidelity training and structured mentorship so apprentices arrive on the ward prepared, supported and confident. We are also planning further cohorts in the new year to continue strengthening the trust’s workforce and supporting longer-term pathways into nursing.”
What this could mean for other NHS trusts
This approach is scalable across the country and particularly relevant for trusts reviewing how new Healthcare Assistants are inducted, supported and retained.
The key is shared ownership. When education teams, matrons and recruitment leads plan together, the apprenticeship becomes more than a training initiative it becomes a workforce strategy.
