Course Overview

A trauma course written for UK practice

Most pre-hospital trauma courses available in the UK are American in origin and teach to American protocols.

We built PHTM because clinicians working to UK guidance needed a course that followed UK procedures. It is endorsed by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

Two days with us in Stockton-on-Tees, after ten hours of eLearning you complete at your own pace.

It is written for registered clinicians and experienced pre-hospital practitioners: paramedics, nurses, doctors, offshore medics, military and tactical medics, and clinicians working in sport.

Recognised by the British Horseracing Authority

PHTM is recognised by the British Horseracing Authority, so it meets the trauma training requirement for doctors working at racecourses.

If you are a racecourse medical officer, or you want to be, this is the course that covers you. It is also built around the kind of trauma you will actually meet on a raceday: high-energy falls, crush and kick injuries, head and spinal trauma, and casualty extrication in an open, moving environment.

PHTM or ITLS?

We run both, and they are for different people. The question is not which course is better — it is where your certificate needs to be accepted.

PHTM is the better course for UK practice. It follows UK guidance and UK procedures rather than American protocols, it is endorsed by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, and it is recognised by the British Horseracing Authority. If you work in this country and your employer or governing body accepts it, this is the course written for the job you actually do.

ITLS is the one that travels. It is an international certification recognised in more than 50 countries, and that matters if you work offshore, overseas, in the military, or on a contract that names ITLS specifically. PHTM is a UK qualification and is not internationally recognised, so if your certificate has to hold up abroad, ITLS is the one to carry. See our ITLS Provider course — we are the only ITLS training centre in the United Kingdom.

If you are not sure which one your role needs, ring us before you book. It is a short conversation and it saves booking the wrong course.

All our prices include VAT, so what you see is what you pay.

What does PHTM cost?

£480 including VAT for the two days and the eLearning. You can secure your place with a 20% deposit.

Does PHTM meet British Horseracing Authority requirements?

Yes. PHTM is recognised by the BHA, so it meets the trauma training requirement for doctors working at racecourses. If you are a racecourse medical officer, or applying to become one, this course covers you.

I work at racecourses. Is this the right course for me?

Yes. As well as meeting the BHA requirement, the content covers the trauma you meet on a raceday: high-energy falls, crush and kick injuries, head and spinal trauma, and casualty extrication in an open environment.

How is PHTM different from PHTLS?

PHTLS is an American programme teaching American protocols. PHTM was written for clinicians practising in the UK, built around UK guidance and UK procedures, and is endorsed by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

Who is the course for?

Registered clinicians and experienced pre-hospital practitioners: paramedics, nurses, doctors, offshore medics, military and tactical medics, and clinicians working in sport.

How long is the certificate valid?

Three years.

How much time off do I need?

Two days. The ten hours of eLearning are completed in your own time before you attend.

Do I need to complete the eLearning before I arrive?

Yes. The classroom days build on it, so arriving without it done means you will not get full value from the course.

Is it recognised by employers?

It is endorsed by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and is accepted across UK pre-hospital, offshore and event medical settings.

Where is it held?

Stockton-on-Tees, close to the A66 and A19, with easy reach from Middlesbrough, Darlington, Durham and Newcastle.

Is accommodation available?

Yes. See the Accommodation section above for our learner rates and what is included.

Over 10,000 people have begun their clinical career with us.

We support NHS ambulance services, dental practices, community pharmacies, care providers and offshore operators. Here is what some of them say.
