Course Overview

One day of paediatric first aid cover for your setting

One day, six hours, £125 including VAT — and you can book a single place.

Emergency Paediatric First Aid covers what keeps an infant or child alive until help arrives. It suits people who work with children in a supporting role, volunteers, sports coaches, and parents, grandparents and carers who want to know what to do.

Read this before you book

If you are registering as a childminder, or you need to be the designated paediatric first aider on a setting’s premises, or the staff member present while children eat, this course does not satisfy those requirements. Those specify the full 12-hour Paediatric First Aid course.

The same applies if you need to be counted in staff ratios having gained a level 2 or 3 childcare qualification on or after 30 June 2016.

We would rather tell you that here than take your booking. If you are not sure which applies to you, call us.

Where you will train

Our Stockton-on-Tees centre, with infant and junior manikins and dedicated simulation areas. Tutors are registered clinicians who still practise.

The course is delivered face to face. The EYFS framework requires that for emergency paediatric content, and it is the only way to assess it honestly.

What the day looks like

Six contact hours, 9:00 to 16:30 with breaks, free parking directly outside.

  • Morning. The role of the paediatric first aider, assessing an emergency involving a child, the unresponsive infant and child, paediatric CPR.
  • Afternoon. Choking, bleeding, wounds and shock, seizures including febrile convulsions, record keeping — then scenario practice and assessment.

On-site delivery

For settings and teams we deliver at your premises, for groups of ten or more.

Six contact hours on infants and children.

  • The role and responsibilities of a paediatric first aider, including consent
  • Assessing an emergency involving a child safely
  • Infection control in a childcare setting
  • The unresponsive infant and child — airway, breathing, recovery position
  • Paediatric CPR — infant and child, and the differences from adult resuscitation
  • Safe use of an AED on a child
  • Choking — infant and child, and what changes if they lose consciousness
  • Bleeding, wounds and shock
  • Seizures, including febrile convulsions
  • Record keeping and what to tell parents

Taught to Resuscitation Council UK Guidelines 2025, which replaced the 2021 guidelines in October 2025.

Assessed by practical demonstration plus a short written paper.

A regulated Level 3 Emergency Paediatric First Aid qualification, valid for three years, meeting the six-hour emergency paediatric standard described in the EYFS framework.

Being clear about its limits

This certificate is genuine and useful, and it does not do everything the full course does. It does not allow a childminder to register, does not make you the designated first aider on a setting’s premises, does not cover the mealtime requirement, and does not count you in ratios if you qualified on or after 30 June 2016. Those all need the 12-hour course.

Plenty of people take this one first and upgrade later. That is a reasonable way to do it, as long as you know which you are buying.

  • You are 16 or over.
  • You can kneel and work on a manikin on the floor. Tell us beforehand if that is difficult.
  • Your English is good enough to follow instruction and complete a short written paper.

No previous qualification or experience needed.

Thinking of upgrading later?

If there is any chance you will need the full 12-hour course within the next year, it is usually cheaper and simpler to do the full course now. Call us and we will tell you honestly which you need.

On-site delivery

For groups of ten or more, at your setting. Ask for a quote.

Is this enough to register as a childminder?

No. Childminders need the full 12-hour Paediatric First Aid course to register and must hold it throughout registration. This six-hour course does not satisfy that requirement.

Does this meet EYFS requirements?

It meets the six-hour emergency paediatric standard, which is recognised. But the specific EYFS duties — the designated first aider on the premises, the staff member present at mealtimes, childminder registration, and counting in ratios for anyone qualified on or after 30 June 2016 — all require a full-course certificate. Check which applies to you before booking.

What is the difference between this and the two-day course?

Six hours against twelve. This covers immediate life-saving. The full course adds illnesses, a much wider range of injuries, anaphylaxis, asthma, meningitis, burns, fractures and poisoning, and is the one that satisfies the EYFS duties above.

Can I book a single place?

Yes, on any of our scheduled monthly dates. Most local providers only take group bookings.

Can I do this online?

No. Emergency paediatric first aid must be delivered face to face — the EYFS framework specifically excludes online platforms for this content, and the practical skills have to be assessed in the room.

How long is it valid?

Three years, then you repeat the course.

Can I upgrade to the full course later?

There is no upgrade route — you would take the full 12-hour course in its own right. So if there is any chance you will need it within the year, it is usually cheaper to do the full course now. Ring us and we will tell you honestly which one you need.

I am a parent or grandparent, not a childcare worker. Is this suitable?

Yes, and we would encourage it. Choking and an unresponsive infant are the two things that frighten people most, and six hours with an infant manikin and a clinician changes how you would respond.

Do you use infant manikins?

Yes, infant and junior. Infant CPR is genuinely different and cannot be learned on an adult manikin.

Who teaches it?

Registered clinicians who still practise. On a paediatric course that matters — the questions people want answered are the ones that start “what if it was my own”.

Can you deliver this at our setting?

Yes, for groups of ten or more.

Where is the centre and is there parking?

Faraday House, Sopwith Close, Stockton-on-Tees TS18 3TT, with free parking directly outside.

Over 10,000 people have begun their clinical career with us.

We support NHS ambulance services, dental practices, community pharmacies, care providers and offshore operators. Here is what some of them say.
