Course Overview

Our Basic Life Support and Safe Use of an AED course is a practical, regulated qualification designed for people who may need to respond to an adult cardiac emergency at work or in voluntary and community settings. Learners build the confidence to assess an emergency situation safely, perform adult CPR, use an automated external defibrillator correctly, and manage an unconscious breathing casualty.

Course Overview

The Basic Life Support and Safe Use of an AED course is designed for people who have a specific interest or responsibility in providing immediate support during an emergency. It focuses on the practical steps needed to deal with an unresponsive adult casualty, including scene assessment, CPR, safe AED use and the recovery position.

This qualification forms part of the Qualsafe first aid suite and is based on the recommendations of the Resuscitation Council (UK) and a panel of experts in emergency medical care. It is intended for people who may need to provide BLS when dealing with an emergency situation which may also involve using an AED. Click HERE for the full course specification.

Who is this course for?

This qualification is suitable for people who have a specific interest or responsibility at work, or in voluntary and community activities, to provide BLS when dealing with an emergency situation that may involve an AED.

It is ideal for:

  • Workplace first aiders who need focused adult BLS and AED training
  • Staff in education, care, leisure and community environments
  • Employers who want staff to respond confidently to cardiac emergencies
  • Individuals who want recognised CPR and defibrillator training
  • Teams who need a short, practical emergency response course

This course is built around the actual Qualsafe unit content and focuses on three core areas: assessing an emergency safely, providing first aid to an unresponsive casualty who is not breathing normally, and caring for an unresponsive casualty who is breathing normally.

During the course, learners will cover:

  • How to conduct a scene survey and check for danger
  • How to carry out a primary survey
  • How to summon appropriate assistance
  • How to recognise when CPR is needed
  • How to perform adult CPR on a manikin
  • How to use an AED safely and follow AED prompts
  • How to identify key considerations when using CPR and an AED
  • How to place an unconscious breathing casualty into the recovery position
  • How to monitor breathing continuously while waiting for further help

Adult CPR and safe use of an AED

A central part of the course is learning how to provide effective adult CPR and use an automated external defibrillator safely.

The qualification specification requires learners to demonstrate:

  • 30 chest compressions
  • Correct hand positioning
  • Compression depth of 5 to 6 cm
  • A rate of 100 to 120 compressions per minute
  • 2 rescue breaths
  • Correct AED pad placement
  • Following AED instructions correctly
  • A minimum CPR demonstration time of 2 minutes at floor level

Learners also cover practical considerations such as infection risk, PPE, barrier devices, wet chests, chest hair, medical patches, implanted devices, pregnancy, children and infant variations, and ensuring no one is touching the casualty during shock analysis or delivery.

Recovery position and unconscious casualty care

The course also teaches learners how to manage an unresponsive casualty who is breathing normally.

This includes:

  • Identifying when the recovery position is appropriate
  • Placing the casualty into a stable, open, draining airway position
  • Monitoring airway and breathing continually
  • Turning the casualty onto the opposite side every 30 minutes where required
  • Placing a heavily pregnant casualty on their left side

This is an important part of the programme because not every emergency will require CPR or defibrillation. Learners need to know how to make safe decisions based on the casualty’s condition.

Syllabus breakdown
