Course Overview

Build the Clinical Confidence to Deliver Pharmacy First and Frontline Clinical Services

This Level 4, CPD-accredited course is designed specifically for registered pharmacy technicians who want to develop the clinical assessment and physical examination skills needed to support Pharmacy First and the growing range of NHS clinical services. It blends a comprehensive online eLearning programme, which builds all of the underpinning theory, with three intensive face-to-face days in Stockton-on-Tees dedicated to hands-on clinical skills.

Because the theory is completed online in advance, your classroom time is spent where it matters most: examining, assessing and practising real clinical skills under the guidance of an experienced multidisciplinary faculty of advanced nurse practitioners, paramedics and GPs. You will leave able to perform and interpret core clinical assessments, apply structured clinical reasoning, and work safely and confidently within your scope of practice.

Why Choose This Course?

  • Clinically focused – three full days of hands-on physical examination and clinical skills, not classroom theory.
  • Taught by practising clinicians – advanced nurse practitioners, paramedics and GPs with real frontline experience.
  • Built around Pharmacy First – skills mapped directly to the national clinical pathways and NHS commissioned services.
  • Level 4 & CPD accredited – recognised development that counts towards your continuing professional development.
  • Blended for busy technicians – complete the theory online at your own pace, then attend focused face-to-face days.
  • Assessed & evidenced – OSCE-style competency assessment and a portfolio you can take back to the workplace.

Delivered across the online eLearning and three classroom days, you will develop the knowledge and practical skills to:

  • Consultation & communication – carry out structured, person-centred consultations, using shared decision-making and clear safety-netting.
  • Clinical assessment skills – perform and interpret blood pressure, pulse, respiratory rate, oxygen saturation, temperature, peak flow, blood glucose, cholesterol and urinalysis.
  • Physical examination – focused ENT (ear, throat and sinus), respiratory, cardiovascular and skin assessment mapped to the Pharmacy First pathways.
  • The Pharmacy First pathways – assess and manage common acute conditions including sore throat, acute otitis media, sinusitis, impetigo, infected insect bites, shingles and uncomplicated UTI in women.
  • Clinical reasoning – prioritise, apply critical thinking, recognise the limits of competence and escalate risk appropriately.
  • Long-term conditions – support the review and monitoring of cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease, diabetes and mental health.
  • Interpreting data & observations – make sense of clinical observations, test results and trends, and recognise the deteriorating patient.
  • Public health & prevention – deliver prevention and health-improvement interventions and brief lifestyle advice.
  • Governance & documentation – work within legal, ethical and professional frameworks, including PGDs, and keep accurate, compliant clinical records.
  • Integrated & multiprofessional care – work effectively across teams and settings and support safe transfer of care.

The course is delivered through a blend of interactive online learning, expert-led demonstration, peer-to-peer practice and high-impact clinical simulation, with competency assessed through OSCE-style stations.

On successful completion, learners will be awarded a MediPro Level 4 CPD certificate in Pharmacy First and Clinical Skills for Pharmacy Technicians, confirming the CPD hours completed and the clinical competencies assessed.
