Course Overview
Nutrition and hydration training online for people who support mealtimes
Older and vulnerable people can lose weight or become dehydrated quickly. Care staff are often the first to notice. This nutrition and hydration training online helps teams spot the signs and act early.
The course has seven modules and 65 minutes of video. It covers a balanced diet, fluids, nutrition across life stages and screening for malnutrition. You can complete it in one sitting or spread it across shifts.
Why choose this course?
✔ Care-focused – written for teams responsible for service users’ food and fluids.
✔ Screening tool explained – a full module on the Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool.
✔ CPD approved – carries 3 CPD units.
✔ Supports CQC duties – links to the regulation on meeting nutritional and hydration needs.
The modules move from basic terms to recognising and responding to risk.
- Key terms – the language used for nutrition and hydration in care settings.
- A balanced diet – the main food groups, shown through the Eatwell model.
- Hydration – why vulnerable people become dehydrated and how to encourage fluids.
- Through-life nutrition – how needs change from childhood to older age.
- Malnutrition and overnutrition – causes, signs and effects of both.
- MUST screening – how the tool identifies people at risk of malnutrition.
- Taking action – the steps to follow when malnutrition is identified.
The course suits care assistants, senior carers, kitchen staff and activity coordinators. It fits care homes, home care, supported living and hospital wards. Anyone who helps at mealtimes or records food and fluid intake will benefit.
Each module has a 70% pass mark. Learners who pass all modules receive a certificate of completion. The course is CPD approved and carries 3 CPD units. Providers can use it as evidence for CQC Regulation 14, which covers meeting nutritional and hydration needs.

Who should do nutrition and hydration training online?
Anyone who prepares food, supports people to eat and drink, or records intake. In care homes this often includes care, kitchen and activity staff.
Does this course teach how to use MUST?
Yes. One module explains the Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool and how it identifies risk. Your employer should confirm who is authorised to complete MUST screening in your setting.
How often should nutrition and hydration training be refreshed?
There is no legal expiry. Many employers refresh this training annually or every 1–3 years, depending on policy.
