Course Overview
Moving and handling people training online – the theory behind safe transfers
Poor handling technique injures staff and can harm the people they support. This moving and handling people training online explains the principles behind every safe transfer. It is designed for staff in health and social care.
The course is the longest in the care range, at 150 minutes across 13 modules. Video demonstrations show slide sheets, bed mobility, falls and hoisting. It covers theory only, so practical training with equipment is still needed.
Why choose this course?
✔ Thirteen modules – from assessment principles through to advanced hoisting.
✔ Video demonstrations – see each manoeuvre before you practise it.
✔ CPD approved – carries 4 CPD units.
✔ Prepares for practical – learners arrive at hands-on sessions knowing the theory.
The modules follow the order of a typical shift, from assessment to complex transfers.
- Safer handling principles – posture, planning and avoiding unsafe lifts.
- Moving and handling assessments – creating and reading risk assessments under the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992.
- Transfers and walking – supporting people to stand, walk and move between surfaces.
- Falls – reducing the risk of falls and what to do when one happens.
- Slide sheets – fitting and using flat and tubular sheets.
- Bed mobility – turning, repositioning and sitting a person up in bed.
- Hoisting – choosing slings, checking the hoist and LOLER 1998 duties for lifting equipment.
- Advanced techniques – further hoisting practicalities and less common manoeuvres.
The course suits care assistants, healthcare assistants, nurses and support workers. It fits residential and nursing homes, hospital wards, community care and supported living. Trainers can also use it as pre-course learning before practical sessions.
Entry requirements: None. Learners should be fit to take part in any later practical training.
Every module has a 70% pass mark. Learners who pass all 13 modules receive a certificate of completion. The course is CPD approved and carries 4 CPD units. Employers can record it as theory training, alongside evidence of practical competence, for CQC inspection.

Training a team? We can help.
Many care providers, NHS teams and employers use our eLearning to keep staff training current. A business account lets you buy courses in bulk, assign them to staff and track completion in one place. That gives you a clear record for audits and inspections.
Since 2008, Medipro has trained thousands of health and care professionals in the classroom and online. We can help you build a training plan that mixes eLearning with practical, tutor-led courses at our centres.
Medipro can advise on practical moving and handling training for your team.
Is moving and handling people training online enough on its own?
No. Online learning covers the theory, but staff must also be trained and assessed with real equipment. Medipro can advise on practical training to complete this.
How often should moving and handling training be refreshed?
There is no fixed legal expiry. Many employers refresh this training annually or every 1–3 years, depending on policy and risk.
Does the course cover hoists?
Yes. Four modules cover hoisting, including checking the hoist before use and advanced techniques. Staff must still be shown how to use the specific hoists in their workplace.
