MCA DoLS training that makes capacity decisions clearer
Staff in care and health make decisions with and for people every day. The Mental Capacity Act 2005 sets out how to do this lawfully. This MCA DoLS training explains who the Act covers, when it applies and how to assess capacity.
The course has four modules and 75 minutes of video. It ends with the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards, which still apply in England and Wales. You study online at your own pace.

This MCA DoLS training covers the law and how to apply it in daily care.

Each module has a 70% pass mark. Learners who pass all four modules receive a certificate of completion. The course is CPD approved and carries 3 CPD units. Providers can use certificates as evidence of MCA training for CQC inspection.

Have Liberty Protection Safeguards replaced DoLS?
No. Liberty Protection Safeguards have not been introduced, and DoLS remain the legal process in care homes and hospitals. In June 2026 the Supreme Court replaced the Cheshire West “acid test” with a wider assessment of each person’s situation. Follow your local authority’s latest guidance alongside this course.
Who needs MCA DoLS training?
Anyone who supports people who may lack capacity for some decisions. This includes care, nursing and support staff. Your employer will set the level required for your role.
How often should MCA training be refreshed?
There is no legal expiry. Many employers refresh this training annually or every 1–3 years, depending on policy and any changes in the law.
