Course Overview

The role of an Associate Ambulance Practitioner (AAP) is critical in frontline emergency and urgent care. The Level 4 Associate Ambulance Practitioner Apprenticeship is designed to equip employees with the clinical skills and professional knowledge needed to provide lifesaving treatment, support paramedics, and deliver patient care in pre-hospital settings.

This apprenticeship is ideal for ambulance services, NHS Trusts, and private healthcare providers looking to develop competent emergency care professionals.

This apprenticeship programme develops competent emergency care AAP professionals who can assess, treat, and support patients in urgent and emergency settings. Key learning areas include:

  • Clinical Assessment & Patient Care – Conducting initial patient assessments and providing basic and intermediate life support.
  • Emergency Driving & Scene Management – Understanding safe emergency driving practices and managing accident sites.
  • Trauma & Medical Emergencies – Responding to cardiac arrests, fractures, and medical conditions.
  • Pharmacology & Medication Administration – Understanding pre-hospital medication and its effects.
  • Safeguarding & Mental Health Awareness – Recognising vulnerable individuals and providing necessary support including mental health.
  • Legal & Ethical Responsibilities – Understanding patient confidentiality, consent, and safeguarding laws.

Apprentices will also gain Maths and English Level 2 functional skills qualifications (if not already achieved).

On successful completion of the programme and to become an Associate Ambulance Practitioner, Apprentices must have achieved the following:

Legacy IHCD driving awards for Emergency and non-emergency driving will be accepted where candidates can demonstrate current and relevant driving experience.

To start this programme apprentices need the following:

  • Be 17 or over
  • Have held a driving licence for a year or more with no more than 6 penalty points
