Course Overview
A health and safety in care online course built around real care settings
A care home is a person’s home and a workplace at the same time. That creates risks that general office safety training does not cover. This health and safety in care online course explains the duties and hazards specific to care.
The course runs to 80 minutes of video across nine modules. It covers responsibilities, accidents, fire, aggression, stress and welfare. You study at your own pace and answer questions at the end of each module.
Why choose this course?
✔ Care-specific – examples are drawn from care homes, not factories or offices.
✔ Dual approval – approved by CPD and IIRSM, with 3 CPD units.
✔ Care Certificate support – can form part of work towards the Care Certificate standards.
✔ Flexible – fits around shifts and can be paused between modules.
The course sets out who is responsible for what, and how to manage everyday risks.
- Home and workplace – why care settings need a different approach to safety.
- Legislation – the main laws, including the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974.
- Responsibilities – what employers must provide and what employees must do.
- Safety systems – policies, procedures and how risk assessments are used in practice.
- Accidents and illness – common incidents, reporting and protecting staff and residents.
- Moving and handling – the basics of safe handling, linked to the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992.
- Fire, gas and electricity – recognising and controlling these general hazards.
- Aggression, security and stress – managing violence, keeping buildings secure and reducing work-related stress.
The course is aimed at anyone working in care, from new care assistants to senior carers. It suits residential homes, nursing homes, supported living and day centres. Domestic, kitchen and maintenance staff in care settings will also benefit.
Each of the nine modules has a 70% pass mark. Learners who pass all modules receive a certificate of completion. The course is approved by CPD and IIRSM and carries 3 CPD units. Managers can use certificates as evidence of staff training for CQC inspection.

Is this course part of the Care Certificate?
It covers knowledge that links to the Care Certificate health and safety standard. The Care Certificate itself is awarded by the employer after observing the worker’s competence. This course can form part of that evidence.
How often should care staff refresh health and safety training?
There is no single legal refresh date. Many employers refresh this training annually or every 1–3 years, depending on policy. Follow your own organisation’s training matrix.
Is a health and safety in care online course enough on its own?
It gives the knowledge base. Your employer must still provide site-specific induction, such as fire drills, local procedures and practical moving and handling training.
