Course Overview

Children’s mental health training online to help you spot the signs early

Staff in schools and youth settings are often first to notice a change in a child. This children’s mental health training online helps them recognise what they see and know what to do next. It focuses on ages from early childhood to young adulthood.

The course has eight video modules and takes 90 minutes. It covers common conditions, warning signs, treatment and the support available. You can study in short sessions, at your own pace.

Why choose this course?

✔ Age-specific – focused on children and young people, not adults

✔ Wide coverage – three modules on the conditions most often seen in this age group

✔ Approved by CPD and IIRSM – earns 3 CPD units

✔ Free trial – check the content before you buy

The eight modules follow the path from first concern to longer-term support.

  • What mental health means – and how it affects a young person’s learning and relationships
  • Common conditions – the illnesses most often seen in this age group, such as anxiety and depression
  • Signs and symptoms – changes in mood, behaviour or attendance that may signal a problem
  • Causes and risk factors – life events and circumstances that raise risk
  • Diagnosis and treatment – how services assess young people and the treatments offered
  • Prognosis and outcomes – what recovery and long-term effects can look like
  • Support – how adults can help, and where children’s mental health training online fits with referral routes

The course is for teachers, teaching assistants, pastoral staff and youth workers. It also suits sports coaches, foster carers and staff in children’s residential homes. Designated safeguarding leads may use it to brief their teams.

Each module has a 70% pass mark. Learners who pass all eight modules receive a certificate of completion. The course is approved by CPD and IIRSM and carries 3 CPD units. Schools and providers can keep it as evidence of staff training for Ofsted.

Training a team? We can help.

Many care providers, NHS teams and employers use our eLearning to keep staff training current. A business account lets you buy courses in bulk, assign them to staff and track completion in one place. That gives you a clear record for audits and inspections.

Since 2008, Medipro has trained thousands of health and care professionals in the classroom and online. We can help you build a training plan that mixes eLearning with practical, tutor-led courses at our centres.

Staff may also want our Safeguarding Children and Depression Awareness courses.

Is children’s mental health training online suitable for school staff?

Yes. It was written with teachers and youth workers in mind. Keeping Children Safe in Education asks staff to be aware that mental health problems can sometimes indicate abuse or neglect.

Does this course make me a mental health first aider?

No. It is an awareness course and does not lead to any first aider title. It gives you the knowledge to notice concerns and pass them on through the right channels.

What should I do if I am worried about a child’s mental health?

Follow your setting’s safeguarding and wellbeing procedures. In most schools that means speaking to the designated safeguarding lead. If a child is at immediate risk, call 999.
