Who is this qualification for?
This qualification is for people working in a suitable pharmacy setting who want to train towards becoming a registered Pharmacy Technician.
Do I need to already be working in pharmacy before I apply?
Yes. This is one of the key entry requirements. The qualification specification states that learners must be employed or be in a training role in a suitable pharmacy-related workplace so they can develop competencies and complete required tasks. Applicants must be employed in a suitable pharmacy-related workplace in the UK.
Can Medipro find me a job or placement?
To start either the commercial route or the apprenticeship route, you must already have an employer or a suitable pharmacy workplace able to support your training. Once that support is in place, you can contact Medipro and the enrolment process can begin.
Can I study this course if I am not yet employed in a pharmacy role?
No. This qualification is based on occupational competence and workplace practice. Learners must be able to gather evidence, complete observations, and demonstrate competence in a real pharmacy environment. Without that workplace support, the qualification requirements cannot be met.
Does this also apply to the apprenticeship route?
Yes. If the learner is employed as an apprentice, the qualification specification says they must complete the integrated apprenticeship version of the qualification. It also states that learners cannot be transferred between the technical occupational entry route and the apprenticeship version, so it is important to register you on the correct route from the start.
What is the difference between the commercial route and the apprenticeship route?
The commercial route is the self-funded, non-apprenticeship option, the apprenticeship route is the employed apprenticeship version linked to an apprenticeship pathway.
What workplace support does my employer need to provide?
Learners must have access to suitable supervision, pharmacy professionals, role models and multidisciplinary teams. There must be a learning agreement between Medipro, learner and employer before the course starts, with roles and responsibilities clearly defined.
How long does the qualification take?
The qualification takes 24 months to complete.
How many hours do I need to work each week?
Workplace experience must be undertaken in the UK for a minimum of 14 hours per week over a two-year period, excluding justified absence such as sickness, maternity, paternity, adoption leave and holidays.
What are the entry requirements?
Learners must be aged 16+, have GCSE English and Maths at Grade C or equivalent, and it recommended a Level 2 science qualification or similar preparation for the science content. We also complete good character checks, such as DBS, and health checks relating to fitness to practise.
Can I apply with international qualifications?
Possibly, for international English and Maths qualifications, learners must provide a UK ENIC Statement of Comparability showing equivalence to GCSE standard before they can join the course.
Do I need a DBS check?
Yes. Medipro will apply for this on your behalf.
Do I need a health declaration or fitness to practise check?
Yes. We will complete health checks to identify any conditions that may affect a learner’s fitness to practise and how these will be managed.
Is this qualification recognised by the GPhC?
Yes. The qualification is recognised by the General Pharmaceutical Council as meeting the Initial Education and Training Standards for Pharmacy Technicians, and on completion, subject to regulatory requirements, it enables you to register with the GPhC as a Pharmacy Technician.
Does completing the course automatically make me a registered Pharmacy Technician?
Not automatically. Successful completion makes the learner eligible to apply for registration with the GPhC, subject to regulatory requirements.
How is the course delivered?
The course is delivered online and includes interactive modules, monthly tutor-led tutorials, live support sessions, Aptem access, workplace evidence collection, and structured reviews every 10 to 12 weeks.
What will I study?
Topics include legal and professional standards, dispensing, final accuracy checking, pharmacology, medicines reconciliation, quality improvement, patient-centred care, infection control and a range of clinical areas. The qualification is built around both knowledge and skills units mapped to GPhC learning outcomes.
How is the qualification assessed?
Learners are assessed through a portfolio of evidence and must be assessed in their own workplace in line with their employer’s standard operating procedures. Evidence may include written assignments, examinations, observations, questioning, practical activities, reflective logs, witness testimony and project work. Your page also lists written assignments, digital quizzes, tutor observations, a PAD, progress reviews and portfolio evidence.
Do I need to complete workplace observations and evidence?
Yes. This is a work-based qualification. Learners must be assessed in their own workplace and provide sufficient evidence of knowledge, skills and understanding.
