This course is intended for seafarers who are designated to take charge of medical care on board ship. Following completion the student will have sufficient knowledge of the types of ships medical equipment and stores and their use to be able to:
- Diagnose medical problems on board ship
- Provide medical care to the sick and injured
- Participate in co-ordinated schemes for medical assistance to ships
This training is provided in accordance with Regulation VI/4 of the Annex to the STCW Convention and Section A-VI/4 (4-6) of the STCW Code and the Merchant Shipping (Training and Certification) Regulations 1997.
The course content includes:
- Making a diagnosis
- The cardiovascular and respiratory system
- The abdomen
- ENT, dental and ophthalmic
- Communicable diseases
- Wounds and injuries
- Equipment and information
- Patient management (general and specific)
An approved certificate from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency will be awarded upon successful completion.
Students must be at least 16 years of age and have received approved or recognised training in Medical First Aid on Board Ship within the previous five years.
